Assistant Manager pleased as Widnes beat Cheadle Town 2-1

Stuart Humphreys admitted that Widnes weren't quite at their best on Saturday as the Whites beat Cheadle Town 2-1 at the Select Security Stadium.

Chad Whyte netted either side of the half-time interval to put Widnes in a commanding and comfortable position.

Richard Whyatt's 79th minute goal set up a tense finish but Widnes held on for their fourth consecutive league victory.

Speaking after the game, the Widnes assistant manager was pleased with three points but admitted that the team's performance wasn't quite up to scratch.

"In the first half, we didn't really have any cohesion to be honest," Humphreys said.

"I felt that we lacked energy and tempo which is disappointing as we had that in Tuesday's win.

"We made a number of changes so we expected that and managed it.

"In the second half, overall, we were 2-0 up and quite comfortable.

"The lad took their goal well but I thought that we could have defended it better.

"However, we've played well recently here and got nothing out of the game.

"We played Barnoldswick and City of Liverpool and got beat 1-0 in both games when we played better than we did today.

"Football's a funny game but at this stage of the season - and considering where we are in the table - it's all about getting those three points."

Despite the victory, Widnes remain fifth in the First Division, but have now closed the gap to a single point on Whitchurch Alport in third with a game in-hand.

Humphreys played down the significance of other results, insisting that Widnes must only concentrate on themselves.

He said: "To be honest, I'm not really interested in how other teams got on because I don't know the results.

"It's all about what we do - taking every game and every training session as they come.

"We need to ensure that we put a team out there that gives us the best chance and opportunities to win matches."

Winger Alex Davies limped off with injury shortly after the hour-mark. Humphreys said that the injury needs to be monitored ahead of Monday's clash with Prestwich Heys.

He said: "We'll monitor Alex's injury over the next 24 hours.

"It's an impact injury (dead leg) so he'll probably miss out on Monday.

"I'm not going to 100% rule him out because he was absolutely fantastic on his debut on Tuesday at Holker."
