Joey Dunn offers his verdict on Widnes' 2-1 win at Squires Gate on Friday night

"It was a good night" - that was the verdict from manager Joey Dunn as Widnes made it back-to-back league victories on Friday night, coming from behind to record a 2-1 victory at Squires Gate.

Dean Ing's 26th minute opener ensured that Gate led at the break before Chris Lomax continued his rich vein of form, netting his fourth goal of the season early in the second half with Tom Mitchell securing the points 13 minutes later.

"It was a good night," Dunn said.

"After the results we've had, there was a bit of edginess about our play tonight but it was important to get the three points which we fully deserved.

"We hit the post multiple times and had shots cleared off the line as we tried to close the game out, but I thought that we were good value for our win.

"It was tough and hard-fought but any three points after recent results is an important three points.

"We said to the lads at half-time that we needed to maintain our belief because we knew that we'd score. We never thought that we didn't have enough to win the game.

"They've had a bit of a flat spell, not winning any of their league games so we needed to be wary of that but I thought that we were the much better team throughout the game.

"The players did have to dig deep into the characters to maintain that belief but they deserve credit. I've been critical of them enough this season but I thought that they were on the money tonight and put in a good performance."

Dunn is now targeting another positive result as Widnes host Burscough on Monday night, with the Widnes manager hoping that his players can begin to build momentum going forward.

"That's what we're aiming for. It was the key to last season's success," he said.

"We kept on finding a way which we talked about in a team meeting on Tuesday night.

"We found a way to win tonight. I think that we should have won the game more convincingly but we've got to target three points again against Burscough on Tuesday night.

"If we do that, things will look a bit more rosie in the garden.

"I watched Burscough play Bootle a couple of weeks ago so I'm aware of the setup but I don't know too many of the players.

"They've had a lot of turmoil behind the scenes but they've had one or two decent results and one or two that they'd like to erase from their memory.

"But as we saw tonight, if we go about our game correctly then we can beat most sides. I think the confidence from tonight's game will be really important.

"If we carry that into Monday's game and play with the same drive and desire, I think that we'll be fine."
