All you need to know ahead of Saturday's top-of-the-table clash

There’s a blockbuster clash to look forward to in the Hallmark Security League First Division on Saturday as second-placed Widnes host top-of-the-table Charnock Richard at the Select Security Stadium.

Both sides come into the game on a tremendous run of form, knowing that three points will swing the momentum in their favour at the top of the standings as the season draws to a close.

Charnock and Widnes are three and two points ahead of third-placed Litherland REMYCA respectively, who have played a game more than both sides and have a significantly inferior goal difference. A draw wouldn’t be a reason for either side to panic. City of Liverpool are a further four points behind REMYCA with the Purples’ automatic promotion hopes resting on the result of Saturday’s game as they host Charnock Richard in the penultimate game of the season.

The visitors won 3-0 at Prestwich Heys in their last away game. Carl Grimshaw netted a hat-trick as Charnock passed a tough test as Heys had won seven out of their last eight home fixtures leading up to that clash. That result should have Andy Westwell’s men in good shape for the trip to the Select Security Stadium.

Westwell’s side have won eight consecutive league games – a run only bettered by Widnes. Last time out, Charnock beat play-off chasing Sandbach United 3-1 in their final home game of the season.

Widnes battled to a 2-1 win at Chadderton on Easter Monday, stretching their sensational run of form to 11 straight league victories. Goals from skipper Kevin Pollard and George Lomax ensured that Joey Dunn’s side came away with three points, despite Lomax playing the last 15 minutes and stoppage time in goal after Richie Mottram limped off injured.

Alex Davies is the only confirmed Widnes absentee as he misses the final three games of the season through suspension. Meanwhile, Dunn will be able to call upon duo Owen Wheeler and Jamie Clark who have both returned from their victorious Dallas Cup campaign with Liverpool FC Foundation College.

Most Recent Meetings

These two sides have faced-off twice this season, sharing the spoils with one win apiece.

In December, Widnes booked their place in the semi-final of the Reusch First Division Cup with a 4-1 win at Mossie Park with Tom Mitchell, George Lomax, Karl Ledsham and Chris Lomax netting on the day for Dunn’s men.

Charnock returned the favour two months later, beating Widnes 4-2 in the league. The visitors twice equalised through Kev Towey’s penalty and Billy Webb, before goals from Grimshaw and a Spencer Bibby penalty sealed three points for Westwell’s side.

Joey Dunn looks ahead…

Manager Dunn believes his side have the wherewithal to pick up a crucial victory in the race for promotion.

He said: "It's probably what the league would have wanted - a shootout for the main prize. But we're happy with that.

"We believe that we have the wherewithal to be able to beat any team but I'm sure that they will feel the same way. They're on a good run like ourselves.

"We're only a point behind them on 87 points, so I think both sides have put themselves in a position to rightfully claim an automatic promotion place.

"Next Saturday will probably dictate who picks the trophy up.

"We'll train on Thursday, regroup and make sure that everyone's fit and raring to go."
