All you need to know ahead of Widnes' trip to Northwich Victoria

Newly appointed joint managers Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey will take charge of Widnes FC for the first time on Saturday away at Northwich Victoria.

The duo were appointed on Friday following the resignation of Joey Dunn last week and will be searching for a positive result in their first game at the helm.

Saturday's game marks the first of two trips to Townfield this week. Widnes are in midweek action on Wednesday away against Northwich's landlords Barnton.

Widnes come into the game off the back of a 1-0 defeat against City of Liverpool on Monday night. Akrigg, who was in interim charge on the night alongside Nick Matthews, credited his players for a positive performance despite the result, believing that his side had a good base to build upon going forward.

Opponents Northwich Victoria also have a new manager at the helm, with Steve Wilkes taking charge of his first home game as manager following his appointment last month following the resignation of Paul Moore.

The former Padiham and Runcorn Linnets boss oversaw his new side's 2-1 defeat at Maine Road last Saturday which was Northwich's third straight defeat in all competitions.

Following a positive start to their first ever season in the North West Counties League, Vics are currently on a seven-match winless run, stretching back to mid-August.

Wilkes has strengthened his side heavily with five new signings this past week. Amongst them are Johnny Gorman and Allen Weston. Gorman, who was a member of Atherton Collieries' Premier Division title-winning squad last season, has nine caps for Northern Ireland to his name whilst Weston won a domestic-cup double and promotion with City of Liverpool last season.
