A look ahead to Widnes' inaugural meeting with neighbours Runcorn Linnets

The inaugural meeting between Runcorn Linnets and Widnes takes place on Saturday as the top two clubs in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division go head to head.

It is Linnets that currently lead the chasing pack in the Premier Division, sitting 10 points clear of Widnes having played three games less.

While much has been made of Widnes' recent form, Michael Ellison's men are on a remarkable run of league form, winning all 12 contests since a 1-0 defeat at Irlam on Halloween.

Last time out, Ellison's side secured a 2-0 win over Ashton Athletic with Freddie Potter and Paul Shanley finding the net, but Linnets haven't played in over 11 days heading into this game.

Widnes are also unbeaten in 12 league games since a November loss to Charnock Richard. It is a run where Widnes have won 11 times, only dropping points away at Hanley Town last month.

Tuesday's midweek loss to Marine in the semi final of the Liverpool Senior Cup was Widnes' first defeat in all competitions in 2018, a 14-game unbeaten run.

In their last league outing, Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's men fired seven goals past Barnton, with Jack Banister netting a brace off the bench.

A Familiar Feel

Seven ex-Linnets could potentially feature for Widnes on Saturday, including joint boss Towey, defender Mike Burke and goalkeeper Richie Mottram who were all fan favourites during their time at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

Chris Lomax, Joe Fielding, Billy Webb and Jay Roberts have all played for Linnets in the past.

Team News

Widnes should be at full strength for their trip to Linnets. George and Chris Lomax are both available again after being cup tied in midweek, while Stuart Cook and Michael Grogan are also back in contention after missing the defeat to Marine as both were ineligible.

Joint boss Akrigg could also return while Roberts and Jack Graham are both pushing for starts.

Off The Pitch

It's a busy day for Linnets off the pitch as they mark the official opening of the new clubhouse at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Halton, Councillor Alan and Mrs Joan Lowe will perform a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1.45pm.

Junior exhibition games involving teams from both clubs will be taking place as curtain raisers to the main event, while local MPs Derek Twigg (Halton) and Mike Amesbury (Weaver Vale), Halton council members and officers, and representatives of the Hallmark Security League will all be in attendance.
