Manager offers his reaction to Widnes' 2-1 win over Charnock Richard

Joey Dunn admitted that his side just did enough to topple Charnock Richard 2-1 in a heavyweight clash at the summit of the Hallmark Security League First Division, but was more than happy with the result nonetheless.

Two goals from George Lomax either side of a Matthew Davison solo effort lifted Widnes above Charnock to the top of table, two points clear with two games left to play.

Speaking after the game, Dunn credited his side for grinding out an important three points.

"Obviously it was a massive game in the context of the season," Dunn said.

"It wasn't a classic, but I thought that we did what we needed to do. Our lads were great.

"We caused ourselves a few problems with a little bit of ill-discipline and we perhaps dropped off too deep.

"But credit to the lads, they got a bit of a telling off at half-time as I didn't think that we were good enough. In the second half, we competed better.

"In the first 10 to 15 minutes of the second half, we created chances, scored and that proved to be key.

"I'm really happy and with the other results going the way they did, we've got a job to do on Tuesday now.

"We knew that they score a lot of goals and they knew that about us as well.

"They scored their goal and that came from us not competing well enough for the first or the second ball and then he was away.

"But, we had to keep them at arms length. Carl Grimshaw up top for them has scored a lot of goals but he'll only score if he has the service, and I think we stopped that really well.

"I thought that we were disciplined with how we did our jobs and I think we deserved the win - Owen didn't really have a save to make in the second half."

The game was played in front of a bumper crowd of 462 - a new club record. Dunn paid tribute to the "fantastic support" after the game.

He said: "The support was fantastic and it makes a massive difference.

"We've played here in front of 40s and 50s - its not the easiest place to get yourself motivated for. If anything, that serves as a motivation for the other team because they're playing in a nice stadium.

"We do need the fans and I think that you saw today with the atmosphere that was created.

"It was a really tense game and then we scored. The cheer at the end was fantastic so we'd really encourage them to come down again and bring one or two of their friends with them."

Next up for Widnes is a trip to AFC Blackpool on Tuesday night where a win will be enough to secure automatic promotion. Dunn wants his side to prove that they're the best by winning their final two games.

"I'm expecting the lads to perform and earn those three points," Dunn said.

"We've got two games to go and we want to win both of those games. That'll mean that we've won 14 straight games to end the season - which is one third of the campaign.

"We want to prove that we're the best. I think winning the league proves that you're the best, but we want to prove that without a shadow of a doubt.

"We'll be going there on Tuesday night to do our job like we have today and hopefully we'll be coming home with the three points."
