Joey Dunn offers his verdict on Widnes' 3-1 victory over Carlisle City

Joey Dunn was left disappointed despite watching his Widnes side run out 3-1 winners at home to Carlisle City, stretching their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions.

Debutant River Humphreys hammered home a 14th minute opener before Luke J Edwards extended Widnes' lead 20 minutes later.

Thomas Lucock handed Carlisle a lifeline on the stroke of halftime, but Widnes secured the victory midway through the second half as Kev Towey netted his 26th goal of the season.

Speaking after the game, manager Dunn was satisfied with the three points, but admitted that his side weren't at their best.

"I'm glad that we've got the three points.

"We managed the game extremely well for about 30 minutes but for some reason, we became ill-disciplined and allowed them back into the game.

"It's always difficult when you face a situation like today where their player has broke his leg, and it puts football into perspective.

"We had to be professional about that, so I'll give the lads credit for doing what they needed to do and put the game to bed after the restart.

"But, I'm not happy with the lads and I've told them so. I think we took too many liberties today and that's something I won't tolerate.

"I have to put things in perspective though as we've not completed a game since 10th December.

"Early on, I thought that we were good and probably should have taken more chances than we did.

"I think we then suffered from mental fatigue, as opposed to physical fatigue, as we just stopped doing things correctly.

"In the second half, the decision-making wasn't the best, and maybe the enforced winter break we've had has affected us somewhat, but we still won the game which is pleasing."

The game was overshadowed after Carlisle's Mark Graham suffered a suspected broken leg early in the second half following a challenge with Widnes' Adam Weston.

Manager Dunn joined everyone at the Club in wishing Mark a speedy recovery.

He said: "We've had a number of games this season that have been forgettable due to a below-par performance from our point-of-view.

"The game today will be remembered for the lad unfortunately breaking his leg.

"Our thoughts go out to him, and we hope that he's okay."

Next up for Widnes is a home game against FC Oswestry Town next Saturday. The game will be played at Barnton's Hinchcliffe Holmes Stadium due to the limited availability of the Select Security Stadium.

Despite the venue change, Dunn says that the preparation for next Saturday's game won't be any different.

He said: "Today's probably give us food for thought in regards to training this week, and conversations I need to have with certain players.

"In the greater scheme of things, it shouldn't really matter who, or where you're playing and we won't be doing anything differently.

"If anything, we can see it as a positive as we've been very good away from home this season but its another game that we've got to look at winning."
